Studying deforestation and changes in the land coverage based on radar images survey. This is the main objective of the agreement between the Regional Center's Amazon National Institute for Space Research (INPE), Belém (PA), and the Telespazio Brazil Company.

The agreement provides radar image digital processing training, development and testing of methodologies to use mapping and land coverage, as well as the field work completion, among other actions directed to studies that use sensor data from COSMO-SkyMed, provided by Telespazio.

INPE monitors the Amazon with satellite images since the 70s. Today this activity is performed in Sao Jose dos Campos (SP), however this monitoring will be gradually transferred to Belém where it is located the largest rainforest of the planet. In this Amazonian institute resources has being invested for the international diffusion of technology satellite monitoring of tropical forests as well as on excellence in research and development in the remote sensing area.

"One of the research segments that INPE Amazon intents to consolidate is the advanced study of tropical forest monitoring using radar data. The partnership with Telespazio is essential to acquire images. On the other hand, will be available the study results with COSMO-SkyMed images, "says Alessandra Gomes, INPE's Amazon.

The Regional Center of the Amazon started its operations in January 2009 in Belem, and in July 2010 it was inaugurated the building that will house the Laboratory for Global Monitoring of Tropical Forests by Satellites. The establishment of the Institute in the North has decentralized the space activities in the country, and also encourages the creation of new research segments, especially in remote sensing.
