German University Grants Title to the INPE’s Director

It follows one communicates published in english on the day (12/12) in the website of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) announcing that the director of the INPE, Dr. Gilberto Câmara, has been awardede with the title of “Doctor Honoris Causa” by the University of Munster, one of the biggest of Germany.

Gilberto Câmara, director of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), has been awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Munster, one of the biggest in Germany. The date for the formal ceremony has not been set yet to give the award granted in recognition of his contribution in the geoinformatics technical-scientific field and by his performance in bolstering and sharing space information in benefit of the sustainability and capacity building in developing countries as well.

Prior to Mr. Câmara, Dalai Lama was the last to receive this title in 2007. The University of Munster is a public institution and is one of the leading intellectual centers of Germany with over 40 thousand students and 130 study rooms. It also offers a wide range of courses, having English as a second language for PhD/Doctorate and Master’s Degree in Geoinformatics, Geospace Technologies along with Information Systems.

Holding the position of a director at the INPE, since December 2005, Gilberto Câmara has been working in this institution since 1980. With an Electronic Engineering degree conferred by the “Instituto Tecnológico da Aeronáutica” (ITA), and MA and PhD in Computer Science, INPE. As a team leader of P&D in the GIS Institute, has participated in the development of a software program of remote sensing and satellite image processing and some other Project methodologies such as DETER and PRODES.

Responsible for the introduction of the free access policy to the INPE’s data on deforestation as well to the China-Brazil Earth Resource Satellite images – CBERS, Gilberto Câmara has become well known for defending the worldwide distribution of orbital data of medium resolution.

In addition to his occupation at the INPE, he also makes part of the Remote Sensing, computing and Applied Earth System Science, the INPE’s postgraduate faculty. More information on his resume, speeches and presentations of his works are available at: http://www.dpi.inpe.br/gilberto/
