WMO Offers EMBRACE Products

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) offers on its website two new products of the Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais - INPE) aimed at applications relying on high-accuracy GNSS positioning, such as agriculture, surveying, construction, drilling, and scientific activities.

Developed by EMBRACE, INPE’s Space Weather Program (TecMap) and the “Ionospheric Scintillation Map” provide important data for evaluating phenomena that can interfere with tracking and telecommunications systems, for example.

Measures of TEC (Total Electron Content) are provided by TecMap, which is designed to estimate the signal delay for single and dual frequency GNSS applications. TecMap displays the measures in color shade, also provides a movie of the TEC variation every 10 minutes.

TecMap was produced under collaboration of STEL-University of Nagoya, Kyoto University, NICT-Japan and IBGE-Brazil, and can be found at http://www.wmo.int/pages/prog/sat/spaceweather-productportal_en.php, following the links Ionospheric> Total Electron Content> Tec Brazil.

On the other hand, the Ionospheric Scintillation Map displays S4 index location and values measured by LISN network ground-based receivers, near real time. A movie shows 2-D plot of the ionospheric scintillation variation on the night of the previous day, represented by the S4 index, which affects telecommunication systems and GNSS signals. The Scintillation Map can be found at http://www.wmo.int/pages/prog/sat/spaceweather-productportal_en.php, following the links Ionospheric > Ionospheric Irregularities > Brazil Ionospheric Scintillation Map.
